Why Fox News Continues To Win The Cable News Ratings Battle

Everyday it's the same thing, Fox News' ratings for every prime time show are higher than the other cable news channels. Every hour for every show, the ratings prove one thing... Fox News is on top. What is going on here? Why are so many people watching Fox News? Everyone knows Fox slants to the right and there are less people claiming they are Repub-licans then ever before. But yet, CNN and MSNBC can't even come close to total viewers, and people between the ages of 25-54 still prefer Fox News to any other cable news channel. I thought Democrats, the Liberal Left Media and MSNBC were the ones that could attract the younger crowd to their ideas and values? Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Matthews seem to be failing at that and are losing viewers every month, no one is listening to them anymore. As for CNN and their attempt to deliver the news free of any bias, they are also failing to attract and hold their viewers. Having Larry King sandwiched between Campbell Brown and Anderson Cooper only provides a cure if you can't fall asleep.

The King in this battle of ratings is... Bill O' Reilly. No one else even comes close. His only competition is from other hosts on the same network such as Sean Hannity and Greta van Susteren. Is it the fact that Fox News has better news personalities than the other channels? They have more beautiful female news anchors? They report the news in away that most Americans want to hear it? Whatever it is, the Nielsen numbers don't lie... or do they?

If Nielsen has 5K boxes in homes for nationwide ratings and 20K boxes for local areas to see who's watching what, how does that represent an accurate ratings system for what the whole country is watching? All the method proves is that out of the 5K homes that are watching the news at that time, most are watching Fox News. Big deal! If every week Nielsen started with a new set of 5K homes (with boxes) we could get a more accurate set of ratings, instead of knowing what the same 5K homes prefer to watch every night. A Fox News viewer is not going to switch to MSNBC and vice versa. Also, we need another company to compete with Nielsen to see how the ratings would match up, Nielsen has too much control on what we think are the most viewed shows. If it were to change, I'm sure Fox News would win most nights... but not every night.
