Legendary actor dies
Over the past weekend, fans around the world were devastated to receive the news of Marvel’s “Black Panther” star, Chadwick Boseman’s death at the age of 43. Boseman has been known to play many prolific roles like Jackie Robinson in “42” and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in “Marshall”. On August 28, Boseman’s family confirmed that the beloved actor had passed away on his social media.
His page’s Twitter post read, “It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Chadwick was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage 4. A true fighter, Chawick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
The public honor Chawick Boseman
The next day, the governor of South Carolina ordered the Statehouse flags to be lowered to half-staff to honor Boseman. South Carolina was Boseman’s home state. His death coincided with the day in which Major League Baseball planned to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day. In his honor, they tweeted that “his transcendent performance in ‘42’ will stand the test of time and serve as a powerful vehicle to tell Jackie’s story to audiences for generations to come.”
Friends honor his memory
Many of Boseman’s film colleagues like Ava Duvernay, Marvel Studios, Chris Evans, and more posted photos of Boseman sharing their experiences with Boseman as an actor and friend. Even democratic vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris posted on social media mourning the loss.
Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther and close friend of Boseman, issued a touching statement of Boseman’s impact on his life and expressed his grief. Boseman’s co-star in Black Panther, Michael B. Jordan, also posted a tribute to Boseman expressing how much he had been grieving after losing a friend he knew and looked up to since the age of 16.
Boseman’s noble act that broke our hearts
It was revealed in Boseman’s family’s Twitter post that Boseman kept his battle with colon cancer a secret to everyone and only a small circle of people in his life, including his family, were aware of his condition. This made it especially devastating for fans to know that he had been filming all of these movies we have come to love while balancing difficult cancer treatments, an unheard of feat.
Boseman had made a video post earlier this year on Jackie Robinson day to honor his hero in which his skinny appearance caused fans to worry over his health. It was later taken down but it is now apparent that Boseman’s health had already been declining from colon cancer. Chadwick Boseman was an inspiration to many with the roles he had brought to life and this noble secret he kept from the world just makes him an even more beloved hero and admirable person who always kept his eyes on the goal.
